  • 2-Litre Limit: You can now carry liquids, pastes, and gels in containers of up to 2 litres in your hand luggage.

  • No More Plastic Bags: The requirement to use a clear, resealable plastic bag for toiletries has been abolished at these upgraded terminals.

Where Do the New Rules Apply?

While the rollout is nearly complete, it is important to note that 2026 is a transition year.

  • Fully Upgraded: Heathrow (all terminals), Birmingham, and Bristol.
  • In Transition: London Gatwick, Stansted, and Luton are currently operating with a mix of old and new scanners. In some lanes, you may still be asked to follow the traditional 100ml rules.
  • Our Advice: Unless you are certain your specific terminal has fully switched, we recommend keeping your liquids under 100ml just in case you are directed to a legacy security lane.

Important 2026 Exceptions

Even with the new technology, a few rules remain strictly in place to keep everyone safe:

  • Metal Bottles: Vacuum-insulated or metal water bottles must still be empty before you pass through the scanners. You can refill them at the numerous hydration stations located airside.
  • Sharp Objects: The ban on large scissors, knives, and other dangerous items remains in effect.
  • International Returns: Remember that while the UK has upgraded its scanners, many airports abroad have not. If you are flying back to London from an airport that hasn’t updated its tech, the 100ml rule will still apply for your return journey.
