Few moments are as nerve-wracking for an animal lover as the hours between your pet’s flight landing at Heathrow and finally holding them again. If your dog, cat or other pet is arriving through the Heathrow Animal Reception Centre (HARC), knowing exactly what happens behind the scenes makes the wait far easier to bear.
I’m Matty from DM Airport Transfers. I’ve driven many relieved owners away from HARC with a freshly arrived pet on the back seat, and I want to walk you through what to expect on the day — including how to plan the journey home so it’s as calm as possible.
HARC: a world leader in animal care
The Heathrow Animal Reception Centre has been caring for animals arriving at Heathrow since 1977 and is run by the City of London Corporation. It’s the only border control post at Heathrow licensed for every species, and it handles an extraordinary range of animals — tens of thousands of dogs and cats a year, plus horses, reptiles, birds and millions of fish.
Contrary to what films might suggest, the cargo hold of a modern aircraft is calm and climate-controlled, and animals are well looked after throughout. HARC continues that care the moment your pet lands.
From the runway to the reception centre
Here’s roughly how the day unfolds once the plane is on the ground:
- HARC or airline handling staff collect your pet directly from the aircraft in a climate-controlled vehicle
- Your pet is taken to the centre near Terminal 4 and removed from its crate
- It’s settled into a pen or kennel with food, water and room to stretch after the flight
- Veterinary staff carry out a welfare check, and paperwork and microchips are verified
- Once everything is cleared, you (or your agent) are called for collection
The clearance process commonly takes several hours and occasionally longer at busy times, so settle in for a bit of a wait. Some pet shippers now offer real-time photo updates through partner services, which can be lovely reassurance during the holding period.
Collection day: what to bring
If you’re collecting in person, wait for HARC’s go-ahead before heading over — turning up early won’t speed things along. When you do go, take your photo ID and your pet’s Air Waybill (AWB) number. Because it’s a government facility, communication is fairly minimal: you’ll mainly hear from them when your pet is ready.
Getting you both home the easy way
After all that waiting, the last thing you want is a stressful drive home. With DM Airport Transfers I’ll be tracking your situation and ready to collect you and your pet when the green light comes. No expensive Heathrow parking, no lugging a heavy crate across a multi-storey, no cramming everything into a small boot. Our spacious MPVs and minibuses take a large crate, your bags and the family comfortably, and I’ll drive calmly and directly to wherever home is — anywhere in the UK.
The valet charge — explained up front
I believe in transparent pricing, so here’s the one extra to be aware of for pet collections. Our standard transfers start at fixed minimum fares of £60 for a saloon and £90 for an MPV. For a pet pickup, there’s an additional charge on top of the £30 shown online, which covers the driver having the vehicle valeted at the end of your journey before the next booking.
It’s a simple, fair reflection of what transporting animals involves — pet hair, the occasional accident from a stressed traveller, and a thorough clean so the car is fresh for the next passenger. I’ll always tell you about this when you book, so there are no surprises at the end of the trip.
A few final tips
- Be patient with timings — the process genuinely can’t be rushed
- Keep your phone charged and to hand for the collection call
- Bring a blanket or toy that smells of home to settle your pet in the car
- Mention the pet collection and valet when booking so I’m fully prepared
- Allow your pet a few quiet minutes in the vehicle before we set off
Reuniting families with their pets is one of my favourite parts of the job. Let me handle the wait and the drive so you can focus on the welcome home.
