As checked on 24 September 2026, London Stansted has three practical options for dropping off or collecting passengers:

• Express Set Down: £10 for up to 15 minutes, or £28 if the stay goes over 15 minutes. It is immediately outside the terminal and uses number-plate recognition.
• Short Stay: from £13 for up to 30 minutes. This is the paid option for a driver who wants to park, meet an arrival or accompany a departing passenger towards the terminal.
• Mid Stay: free for up to one hour, with a free shuttle bus to the terminal. This is the official lower-cost option for a planned drop-off or collection where a short bus transfer is acceptable.

The key change for 2026 is the higher Express Set Down tariff: from 19 March 2026, the airport charges £10 for a stay of up to 15 minutes and £28 for a stay over 15 minutes. Do not treat the terminal forecourt as somewhere to wait for a delayed passenger.

These are airport charges for entering or parking in the relevant areas, rather than taxi fares. They can change, so drivers should always check the airport signs and official parking information immediately before travelling.

Express Set Down: closest to the terminal, but time-critical

Express Set Down is the terminal-side area for a short stop. Since it is barrier-free, there is no ticket barrier or payment machine to use when leaving. Cameras record the vehicle registration, and the driver must pay online, by automated phone service or through an AutoPay account.

Payment is due by 23:59 on the day after the visit. Cash and cheques are not accepted. Missing that deadline can lead to a £100 Parking Charge Notice, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days.

The airport’s terms say that payment does not give permission to wait longer than needed to set down or collect a passenger. The maximum stay is 30 minutes. In practical terms, Express Set Down works best where everyone is ready: luggage is packed, documents are to hand and the passenger can leave the vehicle promptly.

Although the Express Set Down terms cover both pick-ups and drop-offs, Stansted’s driving advice specifically directs people collecting passengers or visiting the terminal towards Short Stay or Mid Stay. For most collections, especially if a flight could be late or baggage reclaim may take time, choose one of those parking options instead of relying on a terminal-forecourt stop.

Short Stay: the straightforward paid option for collections

Short Stay is usually the more sensible choice when meeting someone inside the terminal, helping with bags or waiting for a passenger to emerge from arrivals. The published pick-up/drop-off tariff is £13 for up to 30 minutes, rising to £21 for up to one hour, £25 for up to two hours and £38 for up to four hours.

There is one detail worth knowing before you set off: Stansted’s official pages currently describe the relevant Short Stay area differently. Its dedicated pick-up and drop-off page refers to the Green and Blue Short Stay car parks, while another airport driving page refers to Orange for pick-ups or terminal visits. Rather than assuming a colour from an older guide, follow the live airport road signs for “Short Stay Car Park” on the day. They are the safest instruction once you are on the airport approach roads.

If the person you are meeting needs passenger assistance, allow more time than normal. A hurried 30-minute collection can become expensive if a flight arrives late, bags are delayed or the passenger needs help getting from the terminal.

Mid Stay: the free alternative

Stansted’s Mid Stay car park provides the official free alternative: parking is free for up to one hour and there is a free shuttle bus to the terminal. It is useful for travellers who would rather avoid the £10 Express Set Down fee, and for drivers collecting somebody whose arrival time is reasonably predictable.

The trade-off is convenience. The Mid Stay car park is not at the terminal door, so passengers need to use the shuttle bus and should allow enough time to make the connection. It is therefore less suitable for a rushed departure, anyone with very limited mobility unless their needs have been planned for, or a collection where the passenger has not yet landed.

For a pick-up, agree a clear plan before the flight: for example, the arriving passenger can send a message once they have cleared baggage reclaim and are ready to take the shuttle. That helps the driver avoid using the free hour while the passenger is still waiting for luggage or border control.

Blue Badge passengers and accessibility

Blue Badge spaces are available at Stansted, including in Express Set Down. However, the normal Express Set Down charge still applies. Where the passenger being dropped off or collected holds a valid Blue Badge and needs longer than 15 minutes, the driver should speak to a traffic marshal in the area and show the badge. The airport says a marshal can provide guidance or arrange an extension where appropriate.

The important distinction is that this provision relates to the passenger who holds the Blue Badge, not simply the driver. Vehicles must not be left unattended in the Express Set Down area. If assistance is needed from the vehicle to the terminal, it is wise to plan ahead rather than expect to sort it out at the kerbside.

Local resident discount

Eligible households within 10 miles of Stansted can apply to the airport’s Local Resident Discount Scheme for Express Set Down. Registered residents within five miles pay 50p for up to 15 minutes; those within 10 miles pay £1 for up to 15 minutes. The concession is limited to two vehicle entries per registered household per day, and any stay over 15 minutes is charged at the standard rate.

Registration is required, so visitors should not assume the reduced price will apply automatically just because they live nearby.

How private-transfer collection works at Stansted

A pre-booked private transfer is different from asking a friend or relative to circle the airport roads. The important thing is to follow the collection plan supplied by the operator. Collection points can depend on airport traffic arrangements, the vehicle type and whether the driver is waiting or arriving once the passenger is ready.

When arranging a Stansted Airport transfer, provide the flight number, arrival date, passenger mobile number, destination, number of travellers and realistic luggage details. This lets the operator plan an appropriate car, 5–8 seater vehicle or minibus and gives both sides a clearer plan if the flight timing changes.

Check what the quoted service includes. Airport access and parking charges are separate from a vehicle journey in principle, and travellers should not assume that any operator includes a particular waiting period, meet-and-greet arrangement or airport charge unless it is confirmed in the booking details.

For families, larger groups and travellers carrying several cases, door-to-door travel can be easier to coordinate than finding the right car park, taking a shuttle and locating each other after a flight.
