Heathrow Liquid Rules 2026: What’s Changed and What to Pack

V Class Executive Taxi Transfers

For nearly twenty years, the “100ml rule” has been the bane of every traveller’s existence. We have all stood in those long security queues, frantically stuffing expensive toiletries into tiny clear plastic bags. However, as we move through 2026, Heathrow Airport has officially led the way in consigning those days to the past.

If you are flying from Heathrow this year, the rules have changed significantly thanks to a £1 billion investment in next-generation CT scanners. Here is everything you need to know to breeze through security.

The New “2-Litre” Rule

The most significant update for 2026 is that Heathrow has officially scrapped the 100ml limit across all terminals (T2, T3, T4, and T5).

  • Bigger Containers: You can now carry liquids, pastes, and gels in containers up to 2 litres each in your hand luggage.
  • No More Plastic Bags: You no longer need to separate your toiletries into a clear resealable bag.
  • Electronics Stay Put: Laptops, tablets, and cameras can now stay inside your bag while it passes through the scanner.

These advanced scanners create a 3D image of your luggage, allowing security staff to identify items much more clearly without you having to unpack your entire life into plastic trays.

Important Exceptions to Remember

While the rules are much more relaxed, there are a few “gotchas” to watch out for:

  • Metal Flasks: If you carry a reusable metal water bottle or a double-walled thermal flask, these must be empty before they go through the scanner. You can refill them at the many water stations once you are airside.
  • Check Your Return Journey: This is the big one. While Heathrow has fully upgraded, many international airports (and even some smaller UK airports) still use the old 100ml tech. If you take a 500ml bottle of sun cream out with you, you might be forced to bin it on the way back!

Knowing the rules is half the battle, but getting to Heathrow on time is the other half. With security moving faster than ever, the last thing you want is to be held up by motorway traffic or unreliable trains.
